It's time for data hounds to start drooling. Jerry Yang still isn't ready to toss a Google Analytics competitor to every person who asks, but this afternoon, his company did announce that some people are being given access to the new Yahoo Web Analytics.
Yahoo's work on the product dates back to its acquisition of IndexTools. About 13,000 small business customers, along with an unknown number of advertisers and developers, will be the first to see the fruits of its labor. Then, a rollout is planned to continue through next year.
As for what's on the table, a fresh homepage says that Yahoo Web Analytics "provides real-time insight into visitor behavior on your website. With powerful and flexible tools and dashboards, Yahoo! Web Analytics helps online marketers and website designers enhance the visitor experience, increase sales and reduce marketing costs."

3) When the articles are ready, you need a list of article directories. These can be readily found online, but the problem is, many of these lists are not maintained. So you find quite a handful of outdated or abandoned article directories.

More and more conventional link building methods, like directory submission are of less and less value, Google does not even recommend high quality paid directories any more. In fact soon we’ll see a situation where all artificial ways of link building will be frowned upon.

- Develop a high quality theme or template for a well known platform like WordPress, Drupal, Joomla that gets updated along the software
- Program a WordPress or other popular blog platform plugin, in the best case a platform independent one like Akismet
- Develop a Firefox plugin for a recurring task or dealing with a widely spread annoyance like BugMeNot
- Organize a genuine yearly recurring competition like the Web 2.0 awards
- Organize a Recurring charitable event like the Blog Action Day
- Forge a lasting partnership with a similar service provider, like a graphic design agency joining forces with a PSD2XHTML provider
- Build a community like 9Rules where people “proudly” are part of and display on it on their sites
- Support artists with free or cheaper web hosting (or anything else they need) like MediaTemple does
- Mirror a high traffic site, for instance an open source software or an activist site
- Offer a rebate for a particular group, especially students but also workers class families, veterans or whatever disadvantaged group
- Offer free music or other audio downloads. or at least a way to listen to the audio online, that’s the secret of success of MySpace
- Offer free ebook or better free ebooks (more than one) like O’Reilly for instance

Exactly one month ago Google launched a browser of its own - Chrome. Blogosphere was abuzz for a couple of weeks and the interest still seems to be here to a certain extent (though much less than initially) so I wanted to share with you some results from the first month of operation of Google’s very own browser.
Given the entire buzz that surrounded Google’s browser launch, it is no wonder that everyone was immediately excited about the browser and its performance - especially since the speed we saw was definitely remarkable. Unfortunately, after the initial excitement subsided people started to notice various problems in the shiny and new Chrome - like repeated crashes of the browser for numerous reasons (take a look at the comments on this post and you will see that the reasons are really numerous).
But as soon as Chrome started to appear in Google Analytics as a browser used by visitors, we immediately started to share our amazing Chrome usage statistics. It was quite predictable that technology blogs that featured tons of content about Chrome (as everyone thought it was something of a duty to publish at least a couple of posts per day about various Chrome aspects - with some blogs reaching 10 Chrome-related posts on some days) received enormous search traffic of visitors on Chrome itself - those users that installed Chrome and wanted to know some additional details about this browser. At the time I also reported a record 18% of visitors on Chrome as I had a few posts about Chrome that received tons of visitors and comments as well. But quite understandably later on this share of Chrome-powered visitors in our audience diminished and the average September figure on Profy is 8% while the beginning of October shows about 5%. Yet this number still seems to be quite high for such a new browser, obviously.

But, without lots of money for splashy ad campaigns, companies need to use PR and media coverage to establish and build name recognition. Savvy, ambitious PR is the best way to generate visibility for your company name, executive expertise, mission and products. Frequency and repetition are the two best ways to do this. Pitch every media outlet regardless of location or size. This might seem obvious but too many execs will only take time out for an outlet with high circulation numbers. Big mistake. Small, local newspapers and broadcast outlets are often part of large syndicates and your quotes could be read by much more than the thousands in the local market but actually hundreds of thousands across many major markets.
Respond to every media query no matter how indirect to your business. If you are in tire sales and the reporter is writing about hiring trends…respond. With the economy in limbo what should search marketer's focus on? WebProNews spoke to Milind Mody, CEO of eBrandz Inc, an SEO and SEM firm, about online marketing and advertising.
Mody said because of the economy "a search engine marketer might have to scale down branding campaigns in favor of tactics which yield great 'short as well as long term Return on Investment'."
Specifically Mody said that local search is an important part of the overall mix. "Client reviews and customer ratings form an important aspect of local search SEO. These reviews also helps in branding and reputation management. So I would also highly recommend working with clients on getting their customer ratings and reviews on local search engines."
He said he believes that online advertising is more recession proof than other forms of advertising and that research indicates that any decline in online advertising is because clients are slashing their overall budgets.
"In many cases, clients are reducing print and other offline marketing budgets and spending more online," said Mody.
"One thing working in favor of online advertising is that it gives quick stats. 'X' number of impressions or 'Y' clicks, 'Z' sales and 'AB' % Return on investment. Marketers love numbers. Its very difficult to get such numbers for offline advertising. However certain industries like Real estate and financial institutions have really scaled down their online advertising."

Yesterday I was reviewing the statistics behind one of our link building campaigns which consists of contacting sites & publishers for links in their resource pages, articles or linking areas and the approval to denial ratio based upon responses from those publishers. Surprisingly, almost as many publishers responded with a no or sorry message as responded with a positive message.
Now, it may be easy to just forget those publishers who responded to say no, and concentrate on obtaining the links on the sites which responded with a yes, but each of these email responses is not just a no, in fact, its just the beginning. These emails are warm and trusted connections with these publishers because even though they may have said no, we cannot include the link or sorry, we cannot link to you because we’re linking to your competitor, there are still ways to bring value from these connections which will help with your website marketing.
Here are some ideas I try when responding to an email when someone is not interested in placing a link :
- Banners and Sponsorships : They may not be interested in providing a text link because of the Google linking scare (there are a lot of uneducated webmasters out there) but since I only target topically or vertically relevant sites for my linking campaigns, these sites would more than likely be useful in sending paid advertising to the clients, so I usually ask about placing a banner on their site and their site traffic.
- Affiliate Deals : So, if their traffic is not enough to consider banner advertising for on a CPM or PPC basis, then I would send them information on joining the client’s affiliate program. If the publisher becomes an affiliate, chances are that publisher will drive some sales for the client over the upcoming years. So if this happens, it’s a winning situation because the client wins on he sales end and the time we’ve put into the site research for linking is not wasted.
