Mangoes
Pineapples
Limes
Gallito Milan Menta chocolates - otherwise known as "crack chocolate" for their addictive properties
Britt chocolate-covered fruit and Britt coffee
Local cheeses fresh off the farm
Frescas - freshly-squeezed fruit juices
Menta de Limonade as made by Grano de Oro. Mint, salt, lemon - it's to die for.

Searching for Britt chocolates online lead me to Ticoshopping.com which has all kinds of Costa Rican goodies, but not the mint chocolates alas. I'll have to take a stash with me when I leave.

Al Jazeera praises Obama's Muslim Heritage

Al Jazeera has some news for Americans. Namely, most of the Muslim world wants Obama elected president. Because, he has a Muslim Heritage and will advocate a Muslim agenda. The following is an Al Jazeera view.

The prospect of an African-American with a Muslim heritage becoming president has raised hopes of many around the world for changes in US foreign policy, particularly in the Middle East.
The Illinois senator has also said he could be prepared to negotiate with the leaders of countries that are perceived to be hostile to the US, such as Iran and Cuba.

Huffington Post spreads Muslim falsehoods

Good golly Miss Molly, can you believe that the Huffington Post is still spreading the lie that American Muslims are patriot Americans.

For some reason, the Huffington Post wants us to think that Muslim Americans are supportive of traditional values. Muslim Americans have been quite silent in criticizing world wide terrorism. And, it was almost impossible to find a Muslim American anywhere that would whole heartedly condemn the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

What is the Huffington Post trying to sell us in the following propaganda.

American Muslims are already integrated into American society. We don't get much of a voice in the media, but we are, as a group, middle class and mainstream.
The Pew Research Center notes that we are "decidedly American in [our] outlook, values, and attitudes."1 Moreover, our allegiance is not to the country our parents or grandparents emigrated from, but to the United States -- our own country.

Things I won't miss so much about Costa Rica

Some small inconveniences and one large frustration about living in Costa Rica....

Inconveniences first:
1) A dearth of English-language books. There's one good bookshop which I'm rapidly using up because it's quite small. The other stores run to Penguin Classics and bestsellers. I've read Charles Dickens and Dick Francis, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Donna Leon. Anything else I've needed I've had to buy from Amazon and pay exorbitant import duties on. This wouldn't matter so much if there were public libraries here, but there aren't (not even for Spanish speakers), so I have to buy every single thing I want to read. And I read a lot. As a result I've spent hundreds of dollars and overflowed two bookcases in the time that we've been here. The bookshelves are double-stacked and I have books piled on the dining table (the ones I'm going to sell before we leave) and on the mantels upstairs (the ones I'm currently using - lots of baby books mostly). A public library is a must in my life it would seem.

2) The food. I didn't realise just what I was missing out on until we went to Vancouver in May. All the food we ate, even ordinary old fruit, veges, and meat from the local supermarket, was wonderful. The restaurants are varied and good. And we ate cheap good quality sushi until we were in danger of turning into sushi rolls. There are some fab food items here though, of which more in a later post.

3) The lack of places to walk. There are few sidewalks here and few nice parks, and a whole lot of homicidal drivers, which makes an afternoon stroll around the neighbourhood an alarming undertaking. For lack of anywhere better, we often find ourselves, along with all the other young families in Escazu, in the mall at the weekend pushing the pram on the blessedly smooth, car-free floors. I'd like to live where I can do my promenading outside.

Frustrations second:
1) Only one aspect of life here really makes me crazy, but it's a big aspect. Trying to get administrative and business things done here is a nightmare. Costa Ricans tend to assume that you're not dealing with them in good faith and that you're out to take advantage of them, so they get in quick and take advantage of you first. This is very disconcerting for the novice Costa Rican.
Add to this, the tangled Costa Rican bureaucracy, a pervasive (and basically kind-hearted) desire to avoid conflict or disappointment which results in people simply not responding to inquiries, and a very laissez faire attitude towards actually doing anything, and you've got all the makings of a Kafka novel. For example, Travis has been trying to get a credit card from his bank for about six months. He's been through two or three bank employees and has filled in a forest-lot of paperwork but there's always just one more thing to be done. One more thing that nobody bothers to tell him about until he gets tired of waiting and contacts the bank, at which point the paper shuffling starts all over again. He thinks they've finally run out of forms for him to fill in - if he's right, he'll get the credit card just as we leave.
Gringos manage to build houses, run businesses, and create full lives for themselves here, but you've got to be sharp-witted, persistent, and patient to get it done. You also need to be prepared to yell at strategic moments.

You can now get a lot of your favorite magazines, readable online, for free (at least for now) with Mygazines.com. There are some serious legal issues, aka Copyright Infringement, going on right now so I would hop on the band wagon right now while it's hot. This can't last long.

[Last time for intruding upon your Group. Sorry for all this]

When you talk to mum again, tell her how much I appreciated being invited to that little ceremony at the cemetary after Uncle Bob passed away. I had actually been debating whether to go or not, but was leaning more towards "Yes" because I didn't know when I would see all my relatives together again (on my mum's side, of course). I thought it would be rather nice to see you all, and I wouldn't be trapped inside someone's house...I could walk around the cemetary, talk with people, see how much everyone has changed since I left and then came back from California. So, I was waiting for mum to tell me when it was to be held. Next thing I knew, it was OVER....and so was the celebration of his life at Carole's house. I wasn't invited.

Go ahead, tell them. You've read all my other personal postings. NOT MEANT FOR YOUR EYES, OF COURSE. And you may not think so, but by not telling me who you are and that you're reading my Blog, you are for all purposes LYING to me. What a great bunch of relatives and friends of the family that are out there. I'm just LOVING how you have all snuck into my personal, private world and SPY. Guess what? Believe this or not....and it may come as quite a shock to you....BUT MY LIFE IS NOT FOR YOU TO KNOW!!!! And then to talk about it?!? And I just know that not one single person is going to 'fess up, are you? Ooohhh....I hear that little gossip network again. Hard at work....did you just read what she just wrote?

If you don't even invite me to the cemetary, why the HECK would I want you reading about my personal life????? And so far, not even ONE person has agreed with what you all have done. This is not a newsletter that I send out to my relatives and friends.......this is my Blog that I (meaning of *I* = ME), and only *I* get to choose who gets to read. I had no problems with strangers reading it, but I most certainly do when it's people I know and they are all "whisper, whisper"....we won't talk to her, we won't let her know we are here. We'll just violate her privacy, and spread the news. Who knew the internet could be so much fun. Hey, you are all a spy network now! Good for you!

Again, thanks for the invite to the cemetary. Thumbs up. Great idea!

I'm getting off the computer now. You've completely ruined something that was special to me. Thank you kindly.
